Meet Dr. Mark Winston, Orthopedic Surgeon
My name is Dr. Mark Winston. I grew up in Wisconsin but moved to Kansas City for the combined undergrad and medical school training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I completed my advanced (fellowship) training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
I chose orthopedics because of my love for sports. I played competitive tennis my entire life and played through the college level. Once my competitive career was over, I knew that I wanted to take care of athletes and take care of sports-related injuries.
During my time in Kansas City, I fell in love with the city. I had a chance to work with the Dickson-Diveley group, so when I started looking for jobs, it was really a no-brainer that I would be coming back to Kansas City to start my practice.
When I first meet a patient, it’s very important for me to listen to the patient and obtain a good history. I feel that the diagnosis can often be obtained from the history alone and then confirmed with radiographs and a physical exam.
The biggest gratification is just seeing patients do well. To work through problems with patients—whether they have pain from arthritis or dysfunction due to orthopedic trauma—I’m able to see patients, work through their diagnoses and get them back to work or doing leisurely activities they enjoy.
