Intracept® for Chronic Low Back Pain: Eric’s Story
My name is Eric VanHoozier. I’m 46 years old, and I’ve been dealing with chronic back pain since I was 18 years old.
At 18, I started having very severe back pains. I was a catcher in baseball. My childhood doctor kind of wrote it off to, it’s sports pains/growing pains, not really anything we can do about it. Thirty years old, still having the same back pain, suffering with it on a daily basis. Doctor said OK, you’re really too young for insurance to cover back surgery, so we’re going to have to deal with this through pain medication until you’re old enough for back surgery. So, I was looking for something that would relieve the pain and get me off of pain medication. That’s what Intracept® did for me.
Before the procedure, I was quite nervous about what my results were going to be. After the procedure, I had two little, one-inch incisions in my lower back. That was it – that was the only way I could tell that I even had surgery. They sent pain medication home with me. I took one when I got home from surgery on surgery day (which was a Thursday). I took no pain medication the rest of the weekend, and I returned to work on Monday.
The next morning after surgery, for the first time since I was quite young, I was able to sit up out of bed. It was amazing to sit up out of bed, put my feet on the floor and stand up like a regular person.
The funny thing about the whole process is when I was in my 20s, I felt like I was an old man. When I started to walk, I walked like an old man because I shimmied and scooted my feet across the floor until my back released. Now, I’m almost 47 years old, and I walk like a 20-year-old.
I also sleep better because I can rest – I don’t have to wait for my back to get in the right position to rest, so I wake up every morning refreshed. I would definitely recommend the Intracept® surgery. For me, it gave me my life again!
